Occasions
We send cards for every occasion. All of them arrive late. Some occasions benefit from this more than others.
Birthdays
The classic late card occasion. Arrives with warmth. Never explained. The fact of its arrival is the statement.
Grief and loss
Sympathy that arrives weeks after the immediate period is not less meaningful. It often arrives when everyone else has stopped checking in. This is, frequently, when it is most needed.
Missed opportunities
For the job not taken, the relationship not pursued, the conversation that didn't happen. We acknowledge the window after it has closed.
Achievements
For things that deserved recognition at the time but didn't receive it. Better late than correctly never.
Transitions
Graduations, moves, endings. The card arrives in the new chapter and refers to the previous one.
Ordinary days
We send cards for days that had no occasion but that, in retrospect, mattered. The recipient rarely knows which day is being referenced. That is part of the point.
